National Grid Smart Meter Project Coming to Plainville
National Grid will soon begin work in Plainville as part of its statewide Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) – “Smart Meter” Project, approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities in November 2022.
What’s Happening
Over the next several months, National Grid will:
- Build a Communications Network (Field Area Network – FAN): New communication equipment will be installed on approximately 19 existing utility poles in Plainville. These devices, mounted about 12–15 feet up the pole, allow smart meters to communicate with National Grid.
- Install Smart Meters: Once the network is in place and operational, smart meter installation will begin 3–6 months later at homes and businesses throughout the community.
Timeline
- Network Equipment Installation: Next 3–6 months
- Smart Meter Installation: 3–6 months after network completion
Benefits of the Smart Meter System
- Real-Time Outage Detection: National Grid will be able to identify and respond to outages more quickly.
- Energy Monitoring for Customers: Residents and businesses can track and better manage their electric usage.
- Modernized Grid Operations: Supports efficiency, reliability, and future energy needs.
What to Expect
- Work will occur at utility pole locations; please use caution near crews and equipment.
- No structural changes to poles are expected.
- National Grid will provide further updates before meter installations begin.
