The Plainville Tax Relief Fund is Neighbors Helping Neighbors
The Plainville Tax Relief Fund assists low-income seniors and disabled with their property taxes. It is funded by voluntary donations from generous residents, businesses and community groups, who are able to help those in need.
“A 100% of funds donated go directly toward the real estate taxes of those in need”, said Committee Chair Richard Guillette. “There are no overhead costs or administrative expenses”
About 20 residents have received tax grants, ranging from $500 to $900. A typical recipient is about 73 years old and has lived in Plainville for 44 years. “Some seniors need assistance with their property taxes because they are living on very low incomes”, said Pat Stewart, Board of Assessors Chair. “Each person helped was very grateful for the assistance.
“Town tax bills include a request for voluntary donations to the fund, but many people have their taxes paid by a mortgage company and don’t have a convenient opportunity to make a donation”, said Treasurer-Collector Janet Jannell. “We appreciate the people who take the time to mail in a check or make an online donation.”
“This year will be more challenging for some of our residents, and we anticipate a higher number of grant applications”, said Mr. Guillette. “Your generosity in past years has kept this important program running and is greatly appreciated. We certainly understand that this year may be difficult for you as well, but we will be grateful for your participation.”
