Recycling Center

Overview

Residents participating in the Municipal Trash & Recyclables collection program have access to the Recycling Center located at the Highway Garage to drop off "Special Waste".

The following items are considered "Special Waste" and may be brought to the recycling center. Some items require a fee.  All fee's are payable in orange "Special Waste" stickers.  If an item is not listed, please see Unacceptable Items for other management options.

Recycling Center Annual Pass

Residents who wish to use the Recycling Center at the Highway Garage to drop off items will be required to register their vehicle(s) with the Municipal Refuse Collection Program and display an annual pass in the registered vehicle using the recycling center. Residents will still be required to pay the per item fee's. 

Single family homes that participate in the Municipal Refuse Collection Program will recieve an annual pass for ONE vehicle at NO ADDITIONAL COSTS.

Two family homes will recieve two vehicle passes at no charge.

Three family homes will recieve three vehicle passes at no charge.

If residents wish to register an additional vehicle per household, a fee of $5.00 per vehicle, per year, will be required.

Residents that choose to pay partial payments of 6 months will be issued a 6 month pass.

VEHICLE PASS ONLY

If you DO NOT participate in the Municipal Collection Program and would like to utilize the Recycling Center Drop Off area, you will need to purchase a "Reycling Center Annual Pass." The cost of the pass per vehicle is $25.00 for the period beginning July 1, through June 30. 

  • Only vehicles registered to Plainville residents or property owners will be allowed to use the Recycling Center.
  • Only commercial vehicles that are registered to a non-business are allowed.
  • No business commercial vehicles will be allowed.
  • Per item fee's still apply. 

Hours & Directions

ATTENTION PLAINVILLE RESIDENTS

The Recycling Center will have extended hours on Saturdays for the months April - November. 

Residents are reminded a current Recycling Center Pass is required for access.

The Recycling & Composting drop off area is located at the Highway Garage at 29 West Bacon Street. The hours for drop off are:

  • Mondays 8:00 am - 3:00 pm - year round
  • Saturdays 8:00 am - 3:00 pm - April - November
  • Saturdays 8:00 am - 1:00 pm - Dec, Jan & March
  • Closed February

The center is closed on Holidays and during severe winter weather.

Directions:

From the light at the intersection of South Street and West Bacon Street. West on West Bacon Street, 1/4 mile from intersection on right, Shares driveway with Hilco Vision.  It is the last and only building on the right.

Recycling Center, Highway Garage Drop off Center

The drop off center will be closed on the following holidays:  

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Thanksgiving 
  • Christmas

Please note that the drop off area WILL be open on Patriots Day and Veterans Day. Weather delays cannot be previously announced.

Special Waste Stickers

Special Waste items are paid with orange $2.50 trash stickers. $5.00 = 2 orange stickers, $10.00 = 4 orange stickers, $15.00 = 6 orange stickers. NO CASH OR CHECKS ARE ACCEPTED AT THE RECYCLING CENTER.

Stickers for bags and "Special Waste" are available from Town Hall, Board of Health office and the following Retail outlets in town.

  • Yard Waste
    • The Plainville Municipal Collection Program does not pick up yard waste except for Christmas trees which are picked up curbside the first couple of weeks in January. Residents must deliver their materials to the compost drop off area or compost at their homes. Compost Bins are available for purchase at the Town Hall. The cost is $30.00.     • The compost drop off area is located at the Highway Garage on West Bacon Street.  
    • Yard waste is allowed from Plainville residential properties only. NO COMMERICAL VEHICLES OR LANDSCAPERS ARE ALLOWED.
    • Acceptable materials include:
      • Leaves, grass and other rakeable yard waste.
      • Brush and branches less that 3" wide. 
      • Christmas trees - remove decorations, tinsel, garland and plastic bags.
    • Unacceptable materials include:
      • Stumps
      • Tree's
      • Branches larger that 3" wide
      • Lumber
      • Railroad and landscaping ties
    • Material may be brought in bulk (pick up trucks or trailers), trash cans, paper or plastic bags. ALL MATERIAL MUST BE REMOVED FROM PAPER OR PLASTIC BAGS (Please reuse your bags or place them in the trash cans that are provided)

Unacceptable Items

The folowing items are not accepted by the Municipal Trash Collection Program or at the Recycling Center.  Some items marked with HHW are collected once a year at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection day held at the recycling center.
